Learn Mouse Skills

Details

Activity Description

This Web site is for any level of ESL student who is a beginning computer user and needs help with using a mouse. You can assign higher level students to use the site on their own; however, lower literacy students will need help reading and understanding the directions.

Preparation

Make sure the site is not blocked at your school before having students use it.

How-To

This site can be used as a whole class activity if all your students are beginning computer users, but it is best used in a lab setting for individuals to gain mouse skills. Open a Web browser and go to the URL. Follow the onscreen directions. The mouse skills covered are the following:

  • Holding, moving, and clicking
  • Pointing and clicking
  • Dragging
  • Selecting radio buttons and check boxes
  • Using drop-down menus
  • Scrolling
  • Completing forms
  • Highlighting (selecting), cutting, and pasting

Teacher Tips

Go through the activities on the site yourself before having students use the site in order to predict difficulties.

More Ways

If you have a document camera, you could use it to demonstrate using the mouse if this is a whole class activity.
