  2. Read through the lesson plan.

Lesson Plan

Warm-up
Engagement
  1. The teacher describes the outfit she/he is wearing.
  2. Ask students if the outfit is appropriate for teaching the class or not and why? (To gain students’ interest, you may want to select to wear something that is too casual for the workplace.
  3. Ask students to describe what they are wearing today).
  4. Use this warm-up to diagnose missing vocabulary in order to determine the need for scaffolding before the lesson.
Introduction
Engagement Enhancement
  1. If students need a review of basic clothing vocabulary, the teacher can project images from Learning Chocolate or other vocabulary websites.
  2. If the class is more centered on workplace skills and employability, include reading and discussion about job interviews and include images of appropriate or inappropriate outfits for interviews and a variety of different types of workplaces.
  3. Use the conversation questions on the Google Slideshow for conversation in small groups or whole-class discussions to introduce the topic of clothing and fashion.

Resources:

Note: If your class is multilevel or the students have a lower level of proficiency, you can supplement with Dressing Professionally for Work online reading passage and accompanying exercises.

Presentation
Engagement Enhancement

Use the Google Slideshow, other published language websites or teaching materials, or realia to teach patterns and lessons common clothing-related vocabulary. Remind students about word order when using adjectives in English with the mnemonic NO SAS COMP - the order of adjectives before a noun: number, opinion, size, age, shape, color, material, purpose.

Returning to your own outfit or that of a student in the class, model and then elicit descriptions of the outfits, asking students to add descriptions as they are able. What is the person wearing? Is it a formal or casual outfit? For what occasion would this outfit be appropriate?

As a whole class, discuss the first outfit on slide 8: What is she wearing? Is it a formal or casual outfit? For what occasion would this outfit be appropriate?

Practice
Engagement Enhancement Extension
  1. Check students’ comprehension by having them point out among their classmates people who are wearing specific clothing you describe, such as the following: Who is wearing a red and black plaid flannel shirt? Who is wearing white athletic shoes? Who is wearing a black turtleneck sweater? etc.
  2. As a whole class, discuss the first outfit on slide 8: What is she wearing? Is it a formal or casual outfit? For what occasion would this outfit be appropriate? Elicit model responses.
Practice
Enhancement Extension

In small groups or pairs, have students alternate to take turns describing the outfits you project on the Google Slideshow, starting on Slide 8. Circulate to provide feedback, as needed.

Bring the class back together and replicate the small-group activity, asking for volunteers to describe the outfits. As a whole class, vote for the best outfit and which would be the most appropriate for the different occasions/events:

Which outfit would be best for a…

Describe the assignment prompt for the oral presentation and provide at least one sample from the Google Slideshow. Demonstrate how students could use the sites Pictofit, Zeekit, Joy of Clothes, Pinterest, or any retail clothing websites and how to crop a picture of their faces to add to an image of an outfit.

Tell students:

For this presentation, you will…

Create a virtual model of yourself wearing appropriate clothing for a job interview in a career field of your choice, a date, a party, or other events that you choose.

Add picture(s) of your virtual model on a Shared Google Slideshow

Present your virtual model to the class, telling what occasion you selected the outfit for, and then describing the outfit and why you chose it

Sample Script (Note: The teacher may ask students to submit a written script in advance and provide feedback on it, as desired and as course objectives are related).

Hello, everyone. I have chosen an outfit to wear to ________________________.  I chose a (very formal, formal, casual, conservative, stylish, trendy, etc.) outfit for the occasion/event.  I will wear (describe clothing including colors, patterns, and other features).  I will accessorize with (describe jewelry, glasses, accessories such as hats, scarves, etc.).  I think this outfit is the most appropriate for this occasion/event because …

Instructor’s sample script:

I have applied for a teaching position in a coastal California community college, where I will be working with adults.  I have been invited for an interview. I chose a casual and conservative outfit for the job interview.  I will wear a black dress with a light gray jacket.  I will accessorize with a simple gold pendant necklace, sheer nylons, and a simple white canvas bag.  I will wear low black Mary Jane heels.  I think this outfit is the most appropriate for the job interview because it shows that I am a serious yet fun and easygoing professional.
