Introductions using Flipgrid
Details
Activity Description
Flipgrid is a great tool for helping ESL students of all levels practice their speaking either in the classroom or remotely.
Preparation
- Check the website to ensure it is not blocked at your site.
- Read through the lesson plan.
- Print and make copies of any handouts.
Teacher Tips
You will need to get a free account with Flipgrid.
You can give the students a code to log in to your Flipgrid or you can share a Flipgrid web address. Students will need either a Microsoft account or a Google Account to log on this way. If your students don't have a Google or Microsoft email, you will need to give them a unique username or guest password. Here is where you can give them the username.
More Ways
There are so many ways to use Flipgrid. Read the following post for some ideas on using Flipgrid.

Lesson Plan
Review how to introduce yourself. Have students brainstorm as a whole group some questions they might answer when introducing themselves. At the lowest level of ESL do a lesson on introductions prior to starting this lesson.
Today we are going to practice introducing ourselves and responding to introductions.
Show students how to get to your Flipgrid. Play your sample introduction and ask them what types of things you talked about. In my sample, it was:
- What is your name?
- Where are you from?
- What is your job?
- What do you like to do when you are NOT working?
Review the questions and the answers.
Have students work in pairs and practice their introductions in the face-to-face classroom or in breakout rooms if remote.
Students should record their introduction to the class Flipgrid and add one response from home.
Completed Flipgrids with responses. Use the following 1-point rubric for beginning-level students.
