Flaming Text: “Personal Brand” Paragraph and Slogan Creation
Details
Activity Description
For this writing project, students learn about brands and write about their "personal brands" by defining themselves with a few personal traits that are soft skills, or personality/work characteristics that all employers seek in their workers. In a paragraph, students give examples of the characteristics that make up their personal brands and then use the Web site Flaming Text to create a slogan to accompany their paragraphs.
Preparation
- Download the Example Document (above) - Personal Brand Paragraph and Slogan Prompt and modify it if needed.
- Print and photocopy, as desired.
- Make sure that the Web site is not blocked at your school.
- Practice using the site to familiarize yourself with it and to anticipate students’ questions and difficulties.
How-To
- Explain branding to students, using the assignment prompt. Give students time to compose paragraphs and slogan. Provide feedback on students’ writing.
- When students are ready to create their slogans, visit the Example Web Site (above).
- Select a font category.
- Scroll down and select Next to view another page of fonts in that font style.
- When you see a font style you like, select it.
- In the Preview text box, where it says Type your text here, type in your slogan.
- Scroll down the page and select one of the many banner styles for your slogan by clicking it.
- Now you can use the tabs labeled Text, Logo, Shadow, Background, and Image to further modify your slogan.
- When the slogan is to your liking, select the Create Logo button.
- On the next screen it will ask how you plan to use the logo. Respond by choosing the Personal Use button
- Select the Download button and in the dialog box at the bottom of the browser window, select the drop-down arrow next to Save and choose Save as. Navigate to the computer Desktop to save the image.
- Once the image is saved, you can use the Insert feature of either a word processing or presentation program to insert the image into a document or presentation. Note that animated logos will not preserve animation (movement) within a Word document, but will if copied into a PowerPoint file.
Teacher Tips
- Many sites, like this one, have advertising. Teach your students what it looks like and how to avoid selecting it since many times it contains malware that they will not want on their computers, at school or at home. It is a very important and necessary skill for them to know. Carefully examine the site yourself in advance, to determine what is an ad and what it not, since they are cleverly cloaked. Just let your mouse hover over various items to see if the Status bar on your browser show that the click-able item will lead somewhere else.
- Slogans can be re-colored in a word-processing program such as Microsoft Word by selecting the slogan and on the Picture Tools / Format tab, selecting Color and choosing a different color.
More Ways
- The site can also be used to make logos. A related assignment would be to have students create a personal logo and write a description/explanation of it.
