In this activity, students use the Quick Assessment interactive tool provided by California Career Zone to choose and explore occupational fields that interest them, including educational/training requirements and programs, and create a timeline identifying the steps required for entering this career/profession. This website has information and activities to assist self-awareness, exploring occupations, exploring colleges, finding a job and budgeting.

Preparation

  1. Read the User's Guide This will give you information about the site, online portfolio, journal, exploring occupations, exploring colleges, finding a job, and budgeting. This guide can be printed.
  2. Prepare a worksheet with the information you would like your students to gather in their exploration of various careers.
  3. Students should have basic computer and Web site navigation skills.

How-To

  1. Introduce the topic and display the Quick Assessment </ on the screen. (See Example Web Site above.)
  2. Hover over each interest area, reading the description of each and providing explanations as needed.
  3. Direct students to the Explore tab and go to Fields of Study: Type of Field </ page on the Web site. Have them select three areas that they feel best describe their interests. They should select the areas in order of interest.
  4. Have the students view their results and compare up to four occupations by selecting the boxes to the left of the desired occupations and then selecting the Compare Selected button at the bottom of the table.
  5. Have the students explore the various careers by selecting View Occupation in the column below the information on one of the occupations and complete the worksheet you created.
  6. Have them research the educational/training requirements and local institutions/training programs available for each career.
  7. Have them select one or two careers and develop a realistic timeline with the various steps required for entering this career.
