Activity Description

In this activity students will read about Driving Etiquette as a class and then break into small groups to study a second topic and present what they learned to the class.

DMV.org is not affiliated with any state government. Their goal is to bring the DMV and safety to everyone in a simple and easy to understand format. Other topics at the site include Licensing, ID, Registration and Title, Tickets and Violations, Insurance, Buying and Selling Cars, Car Maintenance, How to Pack an Emergency Kit, and more.

Preparation

  1. Preview the site so you understand what is there.
  2. Download and print the Example Document on Travel and Road Trip Safety (above).
  3. Review the section to be shared with the entire class, Driving Etiquette and Safety Tips .

How-To

  1. Discuss safety on the road.
  2. Introduce the Example Web site (above).
  3. Read together the section, Driving Etiquette and Safety Tips .
  4. Together, discuss how you would present the information you read about.
  5. Review how to create a slide presentation using Google Slides or Microsoft Office PowerPoint or some other presentation software or online tool.
  6. Break the class into groups, mixing reading levels so the lower readers pair with higher levels allowing all to participate in the assignment.
  7. You can either assign topics from this unit or let the groups choose other topics.

Teacher Tips

  • Student collaboration in groups of mixed reading levels is an excellent way to allow all to participate in class projects. Lower level readers can participate by assisting in creating the slide presentation and/or presenting what the group learned. Teach students to participate in groups using different group roles allowing all to excel in the project.

More Ways

  • This Web site has many areas our students need to learn about. Start a discussion about student experiences in driving, working with the DMV, driving laws etc. Have students research the topic.
  • The site also offers students information on getting a Drivers License and ID, Registrations and Title, Tickets and Violations, Car Insurance, Buying and Selling a Car, Voter's Registration, Safety Laws, Driving Distractions, Elderly Driver Safety, Motorcyle Safety, Travel and Road Trip Safety, and more, so explore these too.
