471. Project: I Want to Be an American Citizen

Activity Description

This is an example of a project created by 4th - 6th grade bilingual students on the topic of citizenship. It is written in both English and Spanish, so it could be useful for teaching citizenship as well as being an example of project-based learning. For students who want to study individually, questions and answers related to the interview for United States citizenship are provided.

472. Proverbidioms (Mobile App)

Activity Description

Use the free section of this mobile app in class to teach 20 common idioms or have students use the app individually, in pairs, or small groups to learn idioms. The free section of the app provides an idiom or proverb in text, such as "butterflies in one’s stomach," which the user must find in an illustration that has several idioms represented. After selecting the picture in the illustration, a definition is provided with tabs that give an example sentence using the idiom, the idiom’s origin, and sharing options (share picture on FB, Twitter, or e-mail to a friend). Other examples of idioms include the following: bookworm, cat got your tongue, raining cats and dogs, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

473. Quia Shared Activities: Parts of Speech Game

Activity Description

Use one of the Web site's more than 800 free, shared activities can be used as a warm-up or filler, or for reinforcement and review for listening, reading, vocabulary, or grammar. Students can be assigned to practice individually, but the activities may best be used as whole-class fun games. The example activity can be used as a whole-class review of the parts of speech.

In this activity, students use an interactive quiz to correctly put the steps of how a bill becomes a law in order. They must be careful to consider ALL the steps, even those that take place when the bill doesn't go smoothly.
