Abstract:
The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) studied changes in the world of work and implications of those changes for learning. The focus is how schools prepare young people for work. Research shows that workers must be problem solvers and work smarter. There are three conclusions: high school students must develop a new set of competencies; qualities of high performance must become standard for all companies; the nation's schools must be transformed into high-performance organizations. The document defines and details five competency areas and a three-part foundation of skills and personal qualities that lie at the heart of job-performance.
