Abstract:
Published by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), "Literacy Behind Bars" is the report of the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL). This report provides detailed information, assessed for the first time since 1992, on the English literacy of incarcerated adults (ages 16 and older) in state and federal prisons. The report also includes analyses that compare the literacy of prison and household populations in 2003. An Executive Summary, list of references, and Appendices are included, as well.
