Abstract:
In September 1989, Educational Testing Service (ETS) was awarded a four-year contract by the National Center for Education Statistics to develop and conduct a survey of the literacy skills among adults,16-to-64 years of age, residing in private households and dormitories across the continental United States. Approximately 13,000 adults will be assessed. Field testing will occur in 1991, the main assessment in 1992, with the results reported in 1993. This brochure describes the survey and includes definitions of literacy, procedures to be used, linkages to other literacy assessments, and the information that will result from this survey.
