Abstract:
This report details the results of two of the four components of the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL). The components are the Fluency Addition to NAAL (FAN) and the Adult Literacy Supplemental Assessment (ALSA). The ALSA was administered only to adults who were unable to successfully answer seven simple literacy questions and therefore were unable to proceed to the main literacy assessment. The ALSA gathered information about the letter-reading, word-identification, and basic comprehension skills of the least literate adults. The FAN was administered to all participants in the NAAL and measured their basic reading skills--the ability to read letters, words, and continuous text.
