in Excel and PowerPoint

Ryan de la Vega My name is Ryan de la Vega. I am the mobile lab coordinating teacher from Long Beach School for Adults, meaning that my position, I think you promoted me to coordinator (pointing to Marian Thacher, laughing)

Marian Thacher: Sorry, yes, I did.

Ryan: But my job is to drive a van around the district with two mobile carts housing 32 Gateway laptops to our 22 CBET sites, teaching our CBET students how to use technology to improve their English. And early in our TIMAC project, we were asked to name our project. I liked TIP – it runs well when you read it. Mine is Community Based English Tutoring Technology Integration, which when you read it becomes C-BETTI.

Ryan: So that's the first thing that came to my mind was C-BETTI.

Description: There is laughter from audience. Ryan walks over to a table to retrieve his handouts and passes them out to the audience.

Ryan: I do have handouts, there are some; you know I'm a teacher so I still go hard copies on some things. And I made enough, I think, for our participants to share with their administrators and supervisors and mentees who came today.

Description: The next slide has a dark blue background and white text. The title is Project Goals. It states, "By May 2005, teachers will be able to create a lesson plan using technology and integrating technology. The lesson should be language rich and incorporate basic computer skills in the means of the 'project' students can apply to the real world." Ryan continues his presentation.

Ryan: My project goals for CBET was to increase the CBET teachers' use of technology with their classes and for themselves to make their own lives a little easier designing lessons, writing lessons, and printing out lessons and to help them plan and deliver a technology lesson on their own. When we started the mobile lab, one of the goals was to have Friday field trips where the students get special technology lessons that were meant to be led by their site teachers. It hasn't happened like that for the past couple years. I've been leading the lessons. So I thought this TIMAC opportunity was a great way to put a match under them and say, "Look, I'm passing the torch. It's time for you to start leading your lessons."

Ryan continues.

Ryan: This is our timeline and you'll have the hard copy of that in your handout. We started in the fall of 2004. Even before our first TIMAC meeting, I was taking needs assessment with the teachers, asking them where do you need more help in technology. And I have nine mentees, and mind you, all but maybe two are very techphobic. And you'll also find a needs survey in there. We're limited; we're not online with the mobile lab. There's a lot of red tape to go through to be online with firewalls and everything through the district, so we're just stand alone. We use Microsoft Office for projects and I gave them choices – do you need more help in Word, Excel, PowerPoint? If so, how, what skills do you want to work on?

Description: The next slide is entitled Needs Assessment. It shows for which areas the teachers needs help. Word = 5 votes, Excel = 5 votes, Power Point = w votes. Results of the needs assessment showed a tie between Word and Excel. Ryan continues.

Ryan: And our results; I don't want to take too much time and give you each mentee's results but they voted with a tie with Word and Excel. To break the tie, I did an informal phone call to them and I said, "Look, which one do you want? Choose one." And they decided, you know, I kind use Word a lot. I know enough about that. Let's do Excel and PowerPoint. So we went with Excel and PowerPoint.

Description: The next slide shows the Technology Skills Survey (pre/post). Teachers were asked to evaluate themselves using a scal from 1 to 5 where 1 was "Novice" and 5 was "Expert." Teachers rated themselves in six areas of technological skills:

  1. Basic computer
  2. Windows
  3. Word
  4. Excel
  5. Power Point
  6. LCD projector

The majority of the teachers showed the most growth in the area of Power Point moving 60 cumulative steps toward "expert". Ryan presentation continues.

Ryan: Okay, and you have a copy of this also; the skills survey. The teachers were asked to evaluate themselves. We did a Pre at our December 10th workshop. I used the Likert scale that Paul talked about with a one to five rating of novice to expert. And I told them okay, this is where you're very comfortable when you're and expert and this is where you're not so comfortable when you're a novice. In these six different areas of: basic computer skills, Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the LCD projector. Oh, okay, well you have a hard copy, so I can't show you but this is my look when that happens (pointing to necktie). This is my Snoopy technology tie and it's "Gosh, again!?" Okay, so the majority of the teachers showed the most growth in the area of PowerPoint. And the way that we did that is, this is their Pre.

Ryan: And I went through and highlighted in yellow the steps where they moved up one or two steps toward expert and you can see there's a lot of yellow in the PowerPoint area. Even Excel did very well. But we did have, to be honest, some people who got a pink highlighter that regressed after my mentoring. And what did I do? What happened there? And there's one that's a little worse than that. All I can attribute it to is, that when you start in the fall, you're thinking, I do that (making checkmark), I do that (making checkmark), and they're giving themselves fours and experts and then once we've had a couple meetings and met one-on-one, they're like. "Oh, that's what you meant. I don't know how to do that." And they start circling ones and twos and threes.

Ryan: Okay, this is a little bit of our Excel workshop. I'll put down my notes. We went over some uses in the classroom, explored making a class list, creating a graph, and brainstormed some ideas for uses with students.

Description: The PowerPoint Workshop slide is dated February 11, 2005. There are two pictures. The first has two uses for Power Point suggested. They are:

  • As an instructional too
  • As a constructional tool

There are graphics included in the slide but they are too fuzzy to describe. The second picture is entitled Introduction to Power Point and asks the question, what is Power Point? The answer is: Microsoft Power Point is a powerful but easy to sue presentation graphics program you can use to create professional slide presentations. Ryan continues.

Ryan: PowerPoint actually got split into two workshops because of time. Our first meeting on February 11th, there was another meeting scheduled right behind us and we ran out of time. It was a good thing though, because I left the teachers wanting more. They said, "When are we gonna do this again?" I said, "Okay, next month." And we had PowerPoint broken into two workshops. We talked about PowerPoint as an instructional tool for them to use it as a presentation media and also as a constructional tool for the students to make projects using PowerPoint. And I use Susan's example there, my mentor, who uh I forgot to thank everybody, thank you, who was my mentor before TIMAC long ago, more than, more years than I want to admit probably. Susan was my professor at Cal State, Fullerton, when I was going through my Masters program for TESOL. So she was mentoring me way before I came here to Sacramento.

Description: The next slide is called Goal Setting, February – April 2005. I met with each teacher individually about their lesson ideas and their goals. Ryan continues.

Ryan: We had a goal-setting meeting. And you have a copy of this also, a hard copy. I'm not even going to try to retrieve. And I met with each of the teachers at least once to go over their goals and used our smart goals, making the goals specific, measurable, realistic and within a time frame. I kinda mandated the time frame because TIMAC only has a couple of years, so they are going to be presenting their lessons in the fall of 2005.

Ryan: I have nine mentees which are all CBET teachers at Long Beach School for Adults. And we have 22 sites so we serve about 1400 students. I'm gonna let the teachers speak for themselves. In the following slides, I have the teacher and their project and I've asked them to respond to the mentoring program this year; how they feel about their increased use of technology; how they're going to use it with the students in the future; how they use it for themselves to improve their teaching. I didn't get sound for all of the teachers just logistically with all of us and spread out over the city, I didn't get a sound byte for each person, so I apologize for that.

Ryan: This is our first teacher, Janet. She wants to use Word to teach keyboarding skills.

Ryan: Theresa, I didn't get a picture of Theresa, so but when we did meet, she did create a goal. So Theresa is planning to use PowerPoint in six slides doing student hobbies and favorites, my favorite food, my favorite this, my favorite that.

Ryan: And Colleen also using Word. Okay, there's my arrow. And I apologize for the sound also. When I come here to Sacramento, I'm always very wowed by the technology you have here. You know, I had to snag a microphone off a student's computer in the Learning English Technology Lab. So it's not the highest quality microphone.

Colleen Sasaki: I learned many things from Ryan's mentoring program this year. He showed me how to insert clipart and tables into the field trip flyers. He also showed me how to save and open files on a jump drive that I received for Christmas. Recently, he showed me how to scan a photo and I also learned how to send an attachment through email. I really appreciate Ryan's availability. If I have any questions or problems, he's there to answer or walk me through it and the neat thing is that he let's me discover the answers as much as I can. I look forward to his inservices next year and the new skills that I'll be learning.

Ryan: Colleen mentioned the jump drive on December 10th. Trying to bring the teachers along in technology, I gave them each a little 16 megabyte jump drive, just to lure them in, hoping they would buy their own and start using them more often and they have, so I'm very proud of that. Okay.

Ryan: Cynthia plans to use Excel for her student project in the fall.

Ryan: Linda Goonetilleke is using Word.

Linda Goonetilleke: My name is Linda Goonetilleke. I'm a CBET teacher at the school for adults in Long Beach. Ryan de la Vega has been a great help to us with onsite assistance whenever we get stuck and teaching us new techniques. It's given me a lot of confidence to try out things because he's here to rescue and re-teach when we need help. I've been inserting a lot more pictures into calendars and documents for the students. I've used a flash disk now for the first time. This year, I'm sending attachments with my emails regularly now after he's helped me a few times with that and in the future we'll be doing PowerPoint presentations. He's introduced us to that. And I plan to use the print screen for a lesson for my students. Thank you.

Angie Medina: My confidence in the area of technology has greatly increased this year. Through our teacher inservices and one-on-one support all provided by Ryan de la Vega, I have refined my word processing skills, become more competent in Excel, and I even tackled PowerPoint, a program that I had previously avoided. All in all, I am creating worksheets with greater ease, and I am saving and organizing student information, as well as lesson plans, more efficiently. Next year, I'd like to use Excel with my students so that they may chart their own attendance and progress. I also hope to eventually use PowerPoint to aid my classroom instruction.

Ryan: The aspirated piece, my PowerPoint presentation. This is Lynn.

Lynn Gallandt: Hi, my name is Lynn Gallandt and I wanted to tell you that when I first started this program I was a true non-computer user, full of fear. And I'm happy to report that now, as of May 2005, I feel very confident using Microsoft Word with all the basic skills and learning more and more but not having that fear that I once did. With Ryan's continued patience and availability, I've been able to step up to do things like a PowerPoint presentation and I was able to teach my family how to do it. I can scan a photo and I look forward to working with my students next year on a family project where we get to do a family photo and I'm looking forward to learning how to do worksheets. Thanks Ryan, you were great.

Ryan: I told her to say that (laughing).

Peggy Kozlowski: I've learned several new techniques this year thanks to Ryan's inservice mini lessons, not to mention the countless instances where he makes himself available to us CBET teachers whenever we ask for assistance. I can now do text wrapping which is useful for the field trip flyers and monthly calendars we create for classroom use. I'm learning to create a PowerPoint lesson, scan a photo, use the print screen function, and attach a Word document to send through email. I still need to use notes for most of these tasks but my confidence grows with each new successful outcome. I'm looking forward to continuing this trend and also to imparting more of this knowledge to our students.

Tamara Laramie: During this year I have become more comfortable in using applications that I had really only seen used before. I feel that my knowledge level and confidence have increased in using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The mini inservices were very valuable as well as working one-on-one with Ryan whether is was watching him give a lesson using technology, a scheduled mentoring conference, or an impromptu question as he was walking by my desk. I look forward to continuing next year with my technology growth.

Mentees will continue developing their project lessons to deliver in fall 2005. The mentor will continue with support and technology workshops during monthly CBET meetings.

Ryan: Okay, so those are my nine mentees, all of them coming very far with their technology. And the mentees will continue developing their project lessons with my help and deliver them in the fall as a Friday field trip to their students at their various sites. Most teachers have two to three sites. As for myself, the mentor, I will continue to make myself available for support and our technology workshops during our monthly CBET meetings.
