February is a busy month when it comes to observations and celebrations. In addition to Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents Day, February is also Black History Month. Over the years, OTAN has compiled a number of online resources that teachers can use to add content and information to their lessons on one or more of these holidays. Here are some previous web-based activities that list those resources:

In order to ensure that students and teachers get the most out of black history and Black History Month, we recommend that everyone read this article from Teaching Tolerance on the do’s and don’ts of teaching black history: https://www.tolerance.org/magazine/dos-and-donts-of-teaching-black-history External link opens in new window or tab

Another good article to review is “How to Teach Students About Holidays and History” from the Teacher.org website: https://www.teacher.org/resource/teaching-holidays/ External link opens in new window or tab

We hope that you and your students enjoy learning more about the observations and celebrations of February and increase your understanding of the important historical, social, and cultural underpinnings of these events.
