October 15 to 19 is Digital Citizenship Week across the US. According to the website digitalcitizenship.net External link opens in new window or tab , there are nine, interrelated elements of digital citizenship:

  • Digital access – ensuring that all have access to full electronic participation in society
  • Digital commerce – being an effective consumer in the electronic buying and selling of goods
  • Digital communication – communicating and collaborating appropriately in the electronic exchange of information
  • Digital literacy – the process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology
  • Digital etiquette – behaving responsibly according to electronic standards of conduct or procedure
  • Digital law – following electronic responsibility for actions and deeds
  • Digital rights and responsibilities – protecting those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world
  • Digital health and wellness – developing physical and psychological well-being in a digital technology world
  • Digital security – taking electronic precautions to guarantee safety and self-protection

In our state, the California Department of Education has created a webpage with information about the week and resources that you can use in your classroom to explore different topics related to digital citizenship: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/et/dc/dcwk2018.asp External link opens in new window or tab . This year, CDE encourages educators to focus on the following topics: online privacy, media/online literacy, anti-bullying, and positive online communities/digital leadership. They have created a page of resources that can used to address the topics, both in general and from a family literacy perspective: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/et/dc/wkovrvw.asp External link opens in new window or tab (These resources can be used throughout the year, not just for Digital Citizenship Week!)

Happy Digital Citizenship Week and thank you for your continuous efforts to developing happy, healthy digital citizens in our adult education programs!
