We want to take a moment to congratulate adult education agencies across California that are celebrating significant anniversaries this spring.

The Pittsburg Adult Education Center is celebrating its 90-year anniversary on Friday, May 18. PAEC was started five years before the formal creation of the Pittsburg Unified School District in 1933. According to Lynne Nicodemus, the Principal of PAEC, “For 90 years, Pittsburg Adult Education Center has met educational and job-related needs for adults in the Pittsburg community for whom there are few other resources. It has been an integral part of the community for 90 years helping immigrants learn English, adults earn a high school diploma or GED, and training residents for jobs. Celebrating PAEC’s 90th birthday is an opportunity to recognize the value of the school to the community and raise awareness for those who can use PAEC’s services.” A celebration is planned External link opens in new window or tab, including a BBQ lunch, entertainment, exhibits, free drawings, and more. In honor of the anniversary, a local car dealership has presented the school with a $1,500 scholarship fund for students who want to become Certified Nursing Assistants.

Evans Community Adult School, one of the eleven adult schools in the LAUSD Division of Adult and Career Education, celebrated its 80th anniversary on Wednesday, April 25. Evans started as a small program within one of LAUSD’s elementary schools in 1937, and the school moved to its current location in the 1970s. About 1,000 people attended the celebration, including many former and current staff members and students. You can view pictures from the event and read more about the celebration on this DACE webpage External link opens in new window or tab.
