How Adult Schools Celebrate Adult Education Week

Posted on 04/11/2018

During Adult Education Week, adult schools across California plan events to celebrate the work being done at their locations and the success of the adult students who have overcome difficulties to achieve their goals and dreams.

The theme for Adult Education Week at the San Mateo Adult School this year is “Keys to Success – in College, Career, and Community.” Staff and students from SMAS attended the first ever California Council for Adult Education (CCAE) Rally for Adult Education in Sacramento on Monday. They also were in force along with hundreds of others from adult schools across the state for the annual CCAE Legislative Day on Tuesday, an opportunity to meet with local legislators at the Capitol to help representatives understand the impact of adult education in their communities and across the state. At SMAS on Wednesday and Thursday, former students will share the keys to their success in two Student Success Panels, where current students can learn how the former students met their goals through adult education to achieve success in college, career, and community.

Adult Education Week at Oxnard Adult School is an opportunity for students to access community services in a number of ways. The school is hosting a food drive, a blood drive, and health screenings, examples of some of the ways that adult school and community agencies work together for the benefit of students and local residents. On Friday, the school will be honored by the Mayor of Oxnard and the OUHSD Superintendent.

Adult Education Week reminds us of the close connections between adult schools and the communities in which they operate, and how adult education students are involved in bettering their lives academically, professionally, and holistically.
