ABE Technology Boot Camp Hosted by OTAN

OTAN hosted twenty nine adult educators from around the state in a professional development event on May 13-14, 2010. The goal was to assist ABE teachers in using technology effectively to support instruction.  They chose one of the two 9-hour strands from the following topics:

Moodle for ABE — Participants created an online course using Moodle, a learning management system. They added a variety of resources for students, as well as activities, assignments, and quizzes.

Internet Resources Aligned with ABE Curriculum — Participants identified Web sites with content that aligns with the five components of ABE draft standards. They created a Web site to organize the useful Web links and share them with learners and colleagues.

Adult Education in California: New Models and New Partnerships

At the CCAE state conference in Palm Springs, many adult educators attended presentations and joined conversations about the dominant topic of the day: what is the future of Adult Education in California? Debra Jones provided suggestions about future directions. In her presentation she emphasized the importance of building partnerships. Adult education can no longer go it alone as a separate system. Partnerships will be essential in rebuilding our system and recovering from the current devastation caused by the state budget deficit.

WIA Reauthorization

U.S. Capitol

The Senate is making progress on draft WIA reauthorization legislation. Some sources on the Hill report that we may see a Senate draft sometime around the Memorial Day recess. However, WIA reauthorization appears less likely to happen this Congress, simply because of the few legislative work days left before elections. Should WIA not be reauthorized this year, it is hoped that the progress made thus far will make for a strong start for the 112th Congress.

FY 2011 Federal Budget Update

Federal Budget

According to sources on Capitol Hill, a final budget for FY 2011 is not expected until after Congress returns from their Memorial Day Work Period. Appropriations committees typically start from the previous year's appropriation amounts as a base in absence of a budget.

ePortfolio Pilot Project

The goal of the ePortfolio project is to provide a Website where students can collect examples of their work, develop an online resume, add text, photos and video, and create a Web page to share with their teacher or classmates, and to send to future employers. Teachers from four adult education agencies are participating in OTAN’s ePortfolio Pilot from April to June 2010. This is a feasibility study that is exploring the breadth of purposes and level of difficulty when considering the use of a social-network-like platform for electronic portfolios in adult education.  View a sample ePortfolio here.
