California Adult Education Students Succeed

CA Adult Ed Students Succeed

The California Adult Education Students Succeed project External link opens in new window or tab recognizes former adult education students who have completed their courses and met some or many of their life goals. The Web site offers the stories and photos of 188 former adult learners from 96 different adult education agencies who have success stories to tell. Many of these stories are accompanied by short videos telling the story with interviews from the former student, their teachers and administrators, family members, and others.

Nominations of outstanding students is ongoing and may be submitted online External link opens in new window or tab by any California adult education agency. All nominations are reviewed for completeness and how closely they address the criteria stated on the nomination form. Nominations received on or before April 15, 2013 will be reviewed in late spring or early summer. Nominations received after the 15th will be held for review in the following year.

Coming Soon: OTAC and TIMAC 2013-14

OTAN's two popular academies will be opening their doors to teacher candidates for the 2013-14 school year soon. These year-long professional development projects support adult education agency efforts to implement the effective use of technology and online instructional delivery with the goal of improving student learning outcomes.

The Online Teaching Academy (OTAC) was initiated in 2010 to meet the growing need for professional development to implement online and blended instruction. Participant projects can include complete stand-alone courses, supplemental materials to support classroom instruction or support for an existing online curriculum such as GED Connection or USA Learns. Participants learn how to use Moodle, an online learning management system, as a platform for content delivery. They are also introduced to effective practices in online teaching and learning.

The Technology Integration Mentor Academy (TIMAC) is entering its tenth year and continues to focus on integrating technology into classroom instruction. TIMAC participants have created Web-based resources such as Web sites, wikis, blogs, and social networks to extend learning beyond the classroom.

Applications for the 2013-14 sessions of OTAC and TIMAC will be available in early April 2013.

WIA Reauthorization Bill Passes House Committee

OTAN Legislative Update

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act (H.R. 803), the Republican version of Workforce Investment Act (WIA) reauthorization. The vote was 213-202 with only two Democratic members voting in favor. Fourteen Republicans voted against the bill.

Rep. Tierney (D-MA) offered a Democratic substitute bill, H.R. 798, as an amendment. It failed 192 - 227 along party lines.

The bill will now go to the Senate faces an uncertain future. Having received virtually no Democratic support, there is speculation the bill will not even be considered in the upper house. Instead, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee is reportedly working on a bipartisan WIA reauthorization bill.

During the previous week's debate in the House Education and the Workforce Committee, the SKILLS Act was passed on a 23-0 vote after Democratic members boycotted the meeting in protest.

2013 Technology and Distance Learning Symposium a Big Success!

Technology and Distance Learning Symposium

The Technology and Distance Learning Symposium (TDLS) was held February 22-23 at the Berkeley Adult School. The attendance cap of 150 was easily reached, with several people were placed on a waiting list.

"We would like to offer our thanks to the staff and administration of Berkeley Adult School for providing the venue and to the many presenters, volunteers, and OTAN staff for making the Symposium a remarkable technology event," said OTAN Director Joyce Hinkson.

For the first time, the social networking site Twitter was used to share real-time information and photos about Symposium presentations and happenings. Workshop handouts and several presentations are posted to the symposium Web site. Video recordings will be available of the keynote address, The Power of Technology to Transform Adult Learning, and other selected presentations.
