Joyce Hinkson, OTAN Director, Awarded Technology in Learning Leadership by CUE

OTAN Director, Joyce Hinkson, received a Technology in Learning Leadership (TILL) Award from Computer Using Educators (CUE External link opens in new window or tab) at their annual conference in Palm Springs in March 2014. CUE provides leadership and support to advance student achievement in the educational technology community.

Dr. Hinkson came to the Outreach and Technical Assistance Network (OTAN) from the California Department of Education (CDE), Instructional Resources Unit, where she was state lead for online education. While at CDE, Joyce managed several grants and statewide projects, which included the Technology Literacy Challenge grant, Enhancing Education through Technology grant, Education K-12 Vouchers, Statewide Education Technology Services, California Technology Assistance Project, Environmental and Spatial Technology, and distance learning. She has extensive experience with education technology and has represented CDE at state and national meetings related to technology policy and for best practices in education. Since joining OTAN Joyce has supported a state-wide project with the goal to increase Access to Learning through Online Education (ALOE), presented at local and national conferences and posted over 3,600 tweets on the topic of educational technology and adult education, in addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations at OTAN.

Technology in Learning Leadership Awards recognize local, state and national leaders in educational technology. Members of the broader educational technology community (not necessarily members of CUE) are eligible for recognition in this category for their contributions to advancing the mission of the organization.

Professional Development Opportunities from CALPRO

Two professional development opportunities are coming this month from California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO External link opens in new window or tab).

The online course Integrating Education and Training (IET) will help educators become familiar with several different models for teaching basic skills and vocational skills at the same time. It will guide you in finding the best model for your program and student needs, and taking the steps needed to make it happen. Have you been hearing about the success of programs that combine basic skills or ESL instruction with vocational classes? Want to create a plan for your agency but not sure where to begin? Consider applying for this CALPRO online course that starts on April 28 and runs for 4 weeks.

Managing the Multilevel ESL Course is an online course offering many suggestions on how to create and manage activities for several levels at the same time. Join your colleagues from around the state, share your experience, and learn from others who have been there. This four-week course begins on April 28 and runs through May 23. Plan to spend about 3 hours per week completing assignments and interacting with fellow students at your convenience.

$44M to Assist Youths in Juvenile Justice System

Technology and Distance Learning Symposium

The U.S. Department of Labor recently announced the availability of nearly $44 million in grants for the second round of funding for the Face Forward program. These grants are required to provide, but are not limited to, educational interventions, support services, and work-based learning opportunities for youths ages 14-24, who are now or were previously involved in the juvenile justice system, as well as candidates who fall under their state's guidelines for juvenile diversion programs. The Face Forward grants are explicitly created to "help youth evade the stigma of having a juvenile record through the use of diversion or record expungement strategies." The closing date for receipt of applications under this announcement External link opens in new window or tab is May 2, 2014 by 4 p.m. eastern time.
