OTAN Upgrading to Moodle 2.2

Moodle

OTAN is upgrading and changing our Moodle server! We will be converting from Moodle version 1.9 to the newest version, Moodle version 2.2, in June. This upgrade will allow teachers many additional resources and tools to help deliver quality online materials. Some examples include: The inclusion of grading rubrics for assignments, conditional settings to help pace students through materials, easier quiz creation and management, quick duplication of activities that will provide consistency throughout a course, more robust reporting features and easier integration of Web based resources, to name just a few.

To make the transition as easy as possible, OTAN will offer a series of online workshops to help teachers learn the robust new features of Moodle 2.2 and to review and prepare their online courses in time for the fall semester. Check out the OTAN training calendar (www) for new titles and register now!

WIA Reauthorization Bill Moves Forward

WIA

On Thursday, June 7, the House Education and the Workforce Committee met to mark up and amend the Workforce Investment Improvement Act of 2012, H.R. 4297. Overall, this bill consolidates 25 workforce training programs that have been identified as duplicative and ineffective into a single $6 billion Workforce Investment Fund that provides flexibility for states to determine the best use of funds.

The Workforce Investment Fund would provide for a broad set of general workforce activities, including job seeking services, without requiring states to use the funding for adult education and literacy services. According to the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) (www) "It could result in significantly fewer resources for adult education programs, with no assurance that adult learners with low basic skills would be served."

Results from the Transitional Jobs Reentry Demonstration

MDRC (www) recently released its final report on the Transitional Jobs Reentry Demonstration (TJRD), Returning to Work After Prison (pdf). The report has important implications for policy-makers, researchers and practitioners—as well as for prisoners. Some 700,000 people are released from prison each year. Two-thirds of them are later rearrested and half return to prison within three years. Finding steady work is particularly daunting for them, since former prisoners often have low levels of education and skills and no recent work experience.

Request for Information on Disconnected Youth

The Department of Education, and its federal partners, has been increasingly focused on the challenges associated with serving and improving outcomes for youth, especially disconnected youth. To that end, the Interagency Forum for Disconnected Youth is announcing the release of a Request for Information: Strategies for Disconnected Youth. We hope to hear from all the programs around the country that are implementing promising practices and identifying barriers and challenges.
