State Data-based Profiles Underscore Need for Adult Education Programs

Infographic

The Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) recently released infographics with the title Tapping the Potential: Profile of Adult Education Target Population External link opens in new window or tab. These profiles are available as a PDF for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as for the country as a whole. Using Census data, the profiles display the percentages of adults without a high school credential or English proficiency by age, gender, race, and ethnicity, and their participation rates in the labor market and in adult education. The graphics also cover both the federal and state investment in adult education by year for 2009 and 2010. To find the individual state profiles as well as frequently asked questions about the data and the findings, go to the State Profiles of the Adult Education Target Population page External link opens in new window or tab on the OVAE Web site.

AB 86 Adult Education Regional Consortium Program Certification of Eligibility Materials

AB 86

The California Community College Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) and the California Department of Education (CDE) are pleased to announce the release of the AB 86 Adult Education Regional Consortium Program Certification of Eligibility (COE) Materials. The AB 86 Regional Consortium Program COE is the result of a partnership between the CCCCO and the CDE. The agencies jointly established an AB 86 Cabinet to guide and oversee the activities of a Work Group that developed the COE. The consortia that form as a result of this COE will further expand this partnership across the state to better serve the educational needs of adults in California.

OVAE Announces Engagement Process in Response to PIAAC Results

OECD Logo

In response to the report and the findings that show that the U.S. has a significant low-skilled workforce challenge, Brenda Dann-Messier, assistant secretary for vocational and adult education, announced an engagement process External link opens in new window or tab to understand these challenges, inform the development of a national response, and gather input from a wide range of stakeholders. The goal of the process is to develop a national plan for improving the foundation skills of low-skilled adults in the U.S.

The first step in that process occurred on Nov. 20 with an event hosted by the Department to examine the PIAAC findings in more depth. This was followed by a response from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and a panel with federal agency representatives and national organizations representing state and local perspectives. Participants engaged in small group discussions to share their perspectives on what the findings mean for their stakeholders and interests.

The Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) will continue to host engagement events around the country, seeking input from individuals, state and education officials, business, industry, policy, and labor leaders, researchers, data experts, education associations, philanthropies, and others concerned with the health and well-being of democracy in America.
